Your talent.A bigger stage.

Hypothetical example: a registered nurse working at a Coaldale continuing-care employer is offered a staff position on a medical unit at a hospital in the United States. TN admission is available to citizens of Canada and Mexico who are entering to perform prearranged professional work in a profession set out in USMCA Appendix 2. Registered Nurse appears on that list with a state or provincial licence, or a Licenciatura Degree, as the profession-specific credential. A nurse entering to provide health-care services also needs certification from CGFNS or another DHS-approved credentialing organization. Canadians present the request at a port of entry or, if the employer prefers, through Form I-129; no visa stamp is required. Self-employment is not permitted, and TD dependants may study but may not work. U.S. state licensure is separately required to practise, but lack of that U.S. licence alone is not a basis to deny TN classification.

Start with the TN eligibility and application overview

01

Read the profession's own rule before reading the salary

Appendix 2 does not apply one standard to every occupation. Some entries require a baccalaureate degree, some accept a diploma with post-secondary experience, and the Registered Nurse entry accepts a state or provincial licence or a Licenciatura degree. A Canadian provincial nursing licence can therefore satisfy the profession's TN credential rule. Licensure in the U.S. state of employment is a separate practice-law requirement: the State Department says proof of U.S. licensure is not required to receive TN classification, although the destination state may require it before the nurse may practise. Establish both requirements, then work backwards to the documents and timing for each.

02

Start the licensing process on a separate clock

State boards run their own timetables, and several require credential verification before a licence is issued. Treat that licensing process as a parallel project because the nurse cannot practise until state law permits it, but do not confuse it with the TN admission test: lack of a U.S. licence alone cannot justify TN refusal. The immigration file must instead include the Appendix 2 credential and the CGFNS or other DHS-approved health-care-worker certification, along with citizenship and the prearranged professional-employment evidence.

03

Check whether the job description is nursing or something else

Hypothetical example: the same hospital group offers a second role described as clinical coordinator, which turns out to involve scheduling, vendor liaison and staff rostering rather than nursing practice. Duties decide the category, not the department. If the actual work is administrative, the fact that a nurse would ordinarily do it does not place it inside the listed profession. Ask for a duty list rather than a job title, and read it against the Appendix entry.

04

Keep the employment relationship clean

The nurse must be entering to work for an employer, not to be self-employed. Where an agency is involved, identify who pays, who supervises and who can end the engagement, and make sure the applicant holds no ownership stake in the U.S. employer that has not been disclosed. Arrangements that convert a professional into an independent contractor billing his or her own U.S. entity fall outside what this category allows.
