Your talent.A bigger stage.

Hypothetical example: a water-treatment technologist employed by a Coalhurst utility-services contractor is offered work with an American engineering firm on municipal plant upgrades. Scientific Technician or Technologist appears among the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 2, but it is an unusual entry. Rather than resting on a degree, its qualification rule requires theoretical knowledge in one of the listed disciplines and either the ability to solve practical problems in that discipline or the ability to apply its principles to basic or applied research; the work must directly support a professional in one of those disciplines. TN admission also requires Canadian or Mexican citizenship, prearranged work for a U.S. employer, and no self-employment. Canadians present the request at a port of entry or through an employer-filed Form I-129, without a visa stamp. The deciding document here is a letter about somebody else.

IN THIS GUIDE · A technologist whose eligibility rests on the professional he supports

Start with the TN eligibility and application overview

01

Identify the professional the technologist will support

This entry requires work in direct support of a professional in one of the designated fields — engineering, chemistry, geology and similar disciplines. So the file must name that person, state their qualification, and describe the working relationship. A technologist assigned to a crew with no professional above them, or supporting someone whose own field is different, does not fit the entry. Ask the employer who the supervising professional is before anything else is discussed.

02

Describe theoretical knowledge, not years on the job

The entry requires theoretical knowledge in one of the designated disciplines and either the ability to solve practical problems in that discipline or the ability to apply its principles to basic or applied research. Assemble the technology diploma, course transcripts, any field certification, continuing-education records, and project evidence showing practical problem-solving or application of the discipline. Long experience is useful context, but it does not substitute for either part of the qualification rule.

03

Check that the duties are technical rather than trade work

Hypothetical example: the American firm's description mixes sampling, instrument calibration and data analysis with pipefitting and pump replacement. The technical work fits the entry; the trade work does not, and a role that is mostly the latter is not within any listed profession. Ask for a percentage breakdown of duties. Where the split is genuinely uncomfortable, it is better to know before travelling than to be asked at a counter.

04

Keep the employment relationship straightforward

The technologist must be entering to work for a U.S. employer and may not be self-employed there. If the engagement is routed through a Coalhurst contracting company that invoices the American firm, establish who employs, supervises and pays, and disclose any ownership interest the technologist holds in either business. Structures that leave a person effectively working for their own company across the border fall outside this category.
