Read the general life across the border overview
Hypothetical example: a Picture Butte family is preparing to move on the strength of one member's status, and nobody has asked what happens to everyone else if that status ends. Derivative status depends on the principal's, so a job loss, a business sale, a serious illness or a marriage breakdown affects the whole household at once. Knowing that in advance changes what a family arranges before leaving.
Derivative status follows the principal's
A spouse and children admitted as dependants hold their status because the principal holds theirs. If the principal's employment ends, or the business that supported an investment is sold, the basis for the whole family's status is affected. A spouse's employment authorization that came with dependent status is affected too, which can remove a second income at the same moment as the first. This is not a reason to avoid moving; it is a reason to know which single event the household's presence depends on, and to plan around it.
Ask what the options would be, before you need them
There may be room to change to another status, to have a spouse become the principal under a category of their own, or to depart and return on a different basis, and each of those depends on the facts at the time. What is worth doing now is identifying which of them is even plausible for this household: whether the spouse's occupation appears among the listed professions, whether another employer could sponsor, whether an investment route is realistic. Write the alternatives down while there is no pressure. Put the alternatives in the same document as the main plan and revisit them annually, because a list written in calm conditions is worth far more than one drafted in a crisis.
Keep the Alberta arrangements recoverable for longer than feels necessary
Households tend to close everything behind them: sell the house, cancel provincial health coverage, close accounts, give up a professional registration. Some of that is unavoidable and some is not. Keeping a Canadian professional licence current, maintaining accounts and keeping documents accessible costs little and makes a return manageable rather than traumatic. Check what re-establishing provincial health coverage requires and how long it takes, and keep each family member's citizenship and status documents together in one place. Decide too who in Canada holds copies of the family's key documents and can act on the household's behalf, since arranging that from another country under pressure is considerably harder.
